change here from train to ferry

The old station house and an old phone booth in Nynäshamn some 60 kilometers south of Stockholm. Nynäshamn is at the end of one of the commuter train lines and from here you can continue by ferry to the island Gotland. One of many tourists who have been to Nynäshamn is our old friend Ackworth born.

ode to jakobsberg

I suppose that's what this choir is about, no? Facing the mall in Jakobsberg, hidden in a bush (I almost missed them, along with the blackbird I nearly stepped on) but still singing. And I furthermore guess it's not heavy metal, even if one might get that impression by the looks of them :-)

snowy Stockholm

Strandvägen towards Nybroplan at twenty to nine in the morning. The kiosk on the left is the Strömma ticket office where you can buy tickets for excursions to the archipelago - in the summer. Here's the same view without snow.

daily photo theme day: A Highlander in Stockholm

text & photo: Pia K

Stockholm isn't only about inner city moments and sceneries, oh no, we musn't forget suburbia which can be quite a happening place where some of the most amazing views and encounters can be had. Thus one of my most treasured moments from 2008 was the wonderful and very hairy encounter of the Highlander kind in the suburb of Märsta.

Always being more than fond of these fascinating, adorable ancient looking animals and then actually being able to meet, greet and moo-chat, making new friends with Ruffle, Tousle, Goldilocks and companions in the outskirts of one's own city can only be described as
one of last year's best and a simply magical treat.

With hopes of many such magical moments and treasured treats for 2009 ~

Happy New Year!

The January theme is "Best of the year 2008". We didn't want to do a rerun of our own material. So, instead, we asked our friend Pia to interpret this theme for us. 151 members of City Daily Photo have promised to join on this day.

the end is near

Sometimes, walking our paths through life, we reach a dead end. There are no alternative routes in sight, the road gets narrow and is finally blocked. Fortunately, that's when the next subway train for Mörby centrum arrives here at Liljeholmen station and if you're the train driver it's all pretty nifty since that train is your workplace.

Aunty O's at night

Tantolunden ('Aunty O's grove') and Årsta bay as seen from the Liljeholms bridge at night. In the foreground are jetties that in the summer are full of sailing boats and motorboats. If you sail straight out of the picture you will eventually reach the sea. On the way you will pass the Globe Arena (white 'half sphere'). Alongside Årsta bay is a very popular walkway.

the sollentuna makeover (2)

Imagine a life without electric light. December in Sweden wouldn't exactly be a hit, that much is certain. Here's a view of central Sollentuna on the Sunday before Christmas. Bus station in the foreground, behind it the commuter train station and top right is a new courthouse being constructed.

A windy view from Swedish Mail head office in Tomteboda. It should be Frösunda and Solna on the other side of the railroad. Yes, we have been here before, night and day.

recreational skating

photo: Kenneth Blake

The ever so popular ice skating place in Kungsträdgården. Especially now, when the kids are home from school and parents can take some time off from work thanks to the holidays, it can sometimes be a bit crowded here. There is something special with people skating round and round and ... to music. Care to listen?

In the summer Kungsträdgården can look like this: still music, but maybe in a more romantic mode?

obelisk in white

The glass obelisk at Sergel Square lit in white. The round things on the ground are not hedgehogs covered in snow, it's only Christmas decorations. Quite nice if you ask me. In the background is the Cultural house.

"your turn to put the star on top !"

Jennifer recently helped raise our awareness of levitating Christmas trees. This one doesn't exactly levitate but it does reach a significant height, on top of a construction crane in Sollentuna.

levitating X-mas

text & photo: Jennifer Hallqvist

During a walk in the Old Town it just so happened that in an alley I lifted my gaze and there it was ... the Christmas tree. It was just hanging there, fully lit with Christmas decorations and everything. It made me happy.

going down in colours

These could have been the escalators to the subway, but they're not. They are leading down to yet another floor of a shop. Couldn't resist taking a pic of all the shapes and colours of those lamps. Hope you enjoy them too.

stealth

A modern naval ship by the Old town. If the stealth doesn't work you can always send out the odd canoe as a distraction. I have no idea if it is a Swedish or foreign ship, but I gather we Swedes are quite good at stealth technology.

Saint Lucy's day (and it's cold)

These youngsters celebrating Saint Lucy were found yesterday singing in the street outside one of Stockholm's department stores. Since it was rather chilly and they spent some time singing, they looked cold. But I suppose the money they were given eventually made them thaw.
